Worker dies at Angloplat mine says union
JOHANNESBURG, Sept 6 (Reuters) - South Africa's miners' union said on Saturday that a worker died in a rock accident at a mine operated by Anglo Platinum (AMSJ.J), the world's top platinum producer.
"Yet another mineworker died last night," the National Union of Mineworkers said in a statement. It said the worker died at the K5 shaft in Rustenburg.
Anglo Platinum (Angloplat) (AMSJ.J), the world's largest producer of platinum, is a unit of global mining group Anglo American (AAL.L) (AGLJ.J).
South Africa, the world's top source of platinum and a major gold producer, has a poor underground safety record. The government has routinely shut down operations temporarily after deaths so that companies can probe mine safety or make repairs.
South Africa's mines' sector recorded 221 mine deaths last year, up from 200 in 2006, prompting a strike by an angry NUM, a national safety audit of mines and a review of mine safety laws. (Reporting by Michael Georgy; Editing by Charles Dick)
