Xinjiang riot toll rises, unrest spreads-Xinhua

BEIJING, July 7 (Reuters) - The death toll from violent ethnic riots in China's northwestern Xinjiang region has risen to 156, and police on Monday dispersed "rioters" in a second city, the official Xinhua news agency said early on Tuesday.

Around 200 people "trying to gather" at the Id Kah mosque in the centre of the silk road city of Kashgar were dispersed by police early on Monday evening, the day after deadly rioting in the regional capital Urumqi, Xinhua said.

Police also had "clues" that there were efforts to organise "unrest" in Aksu City and Yili Kazakh Prefecture, Xinhua said, without giving further details. (Editing by Charles Dick)
