Gazprom says some gas still flowing to Ukraine

MOSCOW, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Russian gas supplies toward Ukraine are currently running at 40 million cubic metres per day, but Kiev is not exporting these volumes and is keeping them for domestic needs, a Gazprom executive said on Wednesday.

"In a situation where Ukraine shut down its pipelines and compressor stations, our specialists are still supplying gas via (Russian compressor station) Sundzha toward Ukraine," Gazprom's deputy chief executive, Alexander Medvedev, told Reuters by telephone from Berlin.

"But this gas is not exported and remains in Ukraine," he said. Gazprom usually supplies around 300 mcm per day to Europe via Ukraine, but volumes have fallen dramatically because of a gas pricing dispute between Russia and Ukraine since Jan. 1.
