Sky No.2 in Italy TV revenues, tops Mediaset
ROME, July 7 (Reuters) - News Corp's (NWSA.O) Sky Italia took the No.2 spot in Italian television revenues last year, edging past Mediaset SpA (MS.MI), telecoms authority chief Corrado Calabro said on Tuesday.
State broadcaster RAI led operators with revenues of 2.72 billion euros, he told lawmakers in presenting the agency's 2008 report.
Sky Italia had revenues of 2.64 billion euros. Mediaset, controlled by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, had 2.53 billion euros in revenues, he said.
Sky "consolidated its position, becoming the second television group by revenues", Calabro said.
Media commentators have seen a clash between News Corp owner and Chairman Rupert Murdoch and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who owns Mediaset, a mostly free-to-air broadcaster.
In particular, Sky Italia has suffered a doubling in value-added tax on its services. (Reporting by Alberto Sisto, writing by Ian Simpson in Milan; Editing by Jon Loades-Carter)
