SOCIALISTS BACK PM'S "AUSTERE" BUDGET
The Socialist Party's executive committee expressed support for the budget of Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai's cabinet when the premier briefed them on his plans on Friday. Bajnai will give a more detailed presentation to the Socialist parliamentary group today, after which he will he receive the ministers of social affairs, transport, education and finance to work out the details of the budget. The cabinet plans to submit next year's draft budget to Parliament on Sept. 8, and it could be passed in late November.
GOV'T CUTS MAV, VOLAN SUBSIDIES
"The government has decided to cut next year's budget for State Railway MAV and regional bus company Volan by HUF 70 billion, to HUF 260 billion," government spokesman Domokos Szollar told reporters on Friday. How the subsidy reductions will be split between the two firms was not revealed.
700 EMPLOYEES TO BE AXED AT ELCOTEQ
Electronic parts maker Elcoteq will lay off 400 permanent employees and 300 contracted workers at its factory in Pecs, Magyar Hirlap writes. Elcoteq spokesman Zoltan Krippl confirmed the news, but said the final details will be worked out in talks with the trade unions. The Finnish-based company set up its operation in Pecs in 1998.
