Spain's Iberdrola eyes U.S. LNG import capacity

BARCELONA, Dec 10 (Reuters) - Spain's Iberdrola (IBE.MC) is looking at securing capacity to import liquefied natural gas into the United States as part of its international expansion plans, Jose Simon, director of gas supply at the company said on Wednesday.

Iberdrola already imports LNG into Spain to supply its fleet of gas fired power plants and has bought capacity to regasify LNG at Britain's Isle of Grain terminal from 2010.

"And we are seriously considering securing some now in the United States," Simon told the CWC World LNG Summit in Barcelona.

Iberdrola, one of the world's biggest wind power companies, has a growing green energy and existing gas storage business in North America.

Under its 2007 strategic plan, 35 percent of the company's organic investments for the period of 2008-2010 are destined for the United States, mostly wind, with 30 percent to be spent on organic growth in Spain.

The company also owns ScottishPower, which sells homes and businesses in Britain gas and runs Scotland's biggest coal fired power plant. (Reporting by Daniel Fineren; editing by James Jukwey)
