MADRID, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L) is claiming 670 million euros ($938.9 million) in damages from Telefonica SA (TEF.MC) for alleged abuse of its dominant position in Spain's mobile telephony market, the British group said on Monday.

A Vodafone spokesman confirmed a report in Spanish daily El Pais, adding the claim refers to actions by Telefonica between 1995 and 1999 which negatively affected the business of Airtel.

Airtel was acquired by Vodafone in 2000 as a vehicle to expand its business in Spain.

The 670 million euro figure was calculated by consultancy Nera in a report, the spokesman said.

No one at Telefonica was immediately available for comment. (Reporting by Robert Hetz; Writing by Jonathan Gleave; Editing by David Holmes)
