El Al ups fuel surcharge again as oil tops $80

JERUSALEM, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Flag carrier El Al Israel Airlines (ELAL.TA) is raising fuel surcharges by as much as $23 per journey, effective Oct. 29, in response to rising oil prices.

El Al said on Thursday fuel charges would rise $10 per leg for short-haul flights, $17 for medium-haul and $23 for long-laul routes. The charges will not apply to tickets bought with frequent flier miles.

El Al had raised fuel charges by as much as $25 per flight in May when oil prices reached $60 a barrel.

Last year, El Al hiked fuel charges numerous times when oil reached $145 a barrel. They fell sharply in January when oil prices plunged. (Reporting by Steven Scheer; Editing by Dan Lalor)
