Six die in Czech floods in northeast of country
PRAGUE, June 25 (Reuters) - Six people died in floods late on Wednesday near the Czech Republic's northeastern border with Poland and Slovakia following heavy rains this week in central Europe.
Four people died from drowning in rivers near Novy Jicin, 260 km (160 miles) east of Prague. Two elderly people died when medical workers could not reach them, a police spokeswoman said on Thursday.
"We do not rule out other cases. We assume that as soon as the water level goes down, there could be more fatalities discovered in car wrecks or collapsed buildings hit by the flood," said spokeswoman Miroslava Michalkova-Salkova.
Central Europe has been hit by heavy rain this week that has cut some Polish villages off, raised warnings in Slovakia, and forced Vienna's Albertina Museum to start removing 950,000 artworks from a leaking underground depot. [ID:nLO900074]
Czech meteorologists forecast more rain into the weekend. An official at the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute said mainly smaller rivers have been affected and water levels had mostly already peaked. (Reporting by Robert Mueller, writing by Jason Hovet)
