Fastweb CEO says could share network with T.Italia
MILAN (Reuters) - Italian broadband operator Fastweb (FWB.MI) is not interested in a stake in a company holding Telecom Italia's network but would consider sharing their respective broadband networks, Fastweb Chief Executive Stefano Parisi said on Friday.
Former state monopoly Telecom Italia (TLIT.MI) on July 25 said it would be willing to place its network in a separate company and sell a minority stake.
"We have our own network and we are absolutely not interested in taking a stake in Telecom Italia's network," Parisi told Reuters.
"Unlike in the energy sector, in telecoms the network gives a competitive difference in quality."
However, Fastweb would be willing to share its fiber optics network with Telecom Italia's, Parisi said.
Fastweb's network reaches 45 percent of Italians, but covers only 10 percent of the population with fiber optics. Telecom Italia plans to build a new generation network reaching 20-30 percent of the population.
"We could open our network to Telecom Italia and other operators, and they open theirs," Parisi said.
"This does not mean co-investing but rather opening our respective networks."
Government-controlled Swisscom (SCMN.VX) this year bought 80 percent of Fastweb for 3 billion euros.
