UPDATE 1-Westar Energy profit rises on lower expenses

NEW YORK, March 1 (Reuters) - Utility operator Westar Energy Inc. (WR.N) on Thursday said fourth-quarter earnings rose on lower fuel and purchased-power expenses.
Net profit in the quarter rose to $12.8 million, or 15 cents a share, from $7.4 million, or 8 cents, in the same period the previous year.
The company reported revenue of $343.2 million for the fourth quarter compared with $394.1 million a year earlier.
Three analysts polled by Reuters Estimates had forecast earnings of 11 cents a share on revenue of $383.7 million for the fourth quarter.
Westar said it now expects 2007 earnings of $1.63 to $1.78 per share. Four analysts polled by Reuters Estimates forecast 2007 earnings of $1.69 per share.
