CBOE July option volume up 45 pct from year ago
NEW YORK, Aug 1 (Reuters) - The Chicago Board Options Exchange, the biggest U.S. options exchange, said on Friday its total options volume in July rose 45 percent to a record 126.2 million contracts, up from 87.2 million contracts a year earlier.
An average of 5.7 million contracts changed hands each day last month, up 38 percent from 4.15 million contracts traded per day in July 2007, CBOE said in a statement.
Total volume traded year-to-date increased 33 percent to 683.9 million contracts from 513 million during the same period a year ago.
CBOE's total equity options volume last month totaled 67.2 million contracts, up 46 percent from 46.1 million contracts in July 2007.
July's market share of total industry volume stood at 34.4 percent, a gain of 0.4 percentage points from June and up 1.6 percentage points from July 2007, the exchange said.
In equity options, CBOE's July market share was 29.3 percent, unchanged from the previous month and from a year ago.
In index and exchange traded fund options, CBOE's July market share was 34.4 percent, down 2 percentage points from July 2007.
Year-to-date, CBOE's total market share is 32.5 percent, up 0.7 percentage points from the same period in 2007.
Last month's trading volume at the CBOE Stock Exchange, or CBSX, jumped 207 percent to 315 million shares from 108.9 million shares in July 2007.
