LOS ANGELES, April 2 (Reuters) - Authorities were investigating a cargo container at a Southern California port on Wednesday after it was found scrawled with a graffiti suggesting it was contaminated with anthrax.

Hazardous materials crews were sent to Pier T at the Port of Long Beach at about 10:30 a.m. local time (1730 GMT) to examine the container, Long Beach Fire spokesman Frank Hayes said.

The container was moved to a remote part of the terminal while crews tried to determine if it was contaminated, Hayes said.

Televised images on CNN showed crews, dressed in white coveralls, examining the container. The network said a message reading: "Anthrax, a gift from Osama," in reference to al Qaeda head Osama bin Laden, was found written on the side. (Reporting by Dan Whitcomb, editing by Jackie Frank)
