The chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, reacting to criticism that a bipartisan housing bill does little for homeowners facing foreclosure, vowed to move quickly on broader legislation that would help troubled borrowers get cheaper mortgages backed by public funds.

Verizon Wireless, a division of Verizon Communications (VZ.N), and AT&T (T.N) said they plan to create faster and more robust networks with a new chunk of radio spectrum they won at a recent federal auction of air waves.

After decades of budget cuts left the Consumer Product Safety Commission ill-equipped to police a rising tide of imports, the agency has begun to recover because of a cash infusion that allowed it to make some major investments in equipment and hire new port inspectors.

Major television networks are privately saying that if they have to worry about every time someone utters a profanity on air, they may have to stop real-time broadcasting of live events such as the Academy Awards and Grammys.
