Guatemala not delaying election due to hurricane
GUATEMALA CITY, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Guatemala has no immediate plans to delay its Sept. 9 presidential election because of Hurricane Felix, which tore through Central America on Tuesday, the country's electoral tribunal said.
Rolando Bolanos, president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, said the body would consider postponing the vote only if the hurricane caused serious damage.
"We can't jump ahead," he told a news conference. "Only the tribunal could take a decision in the event that something happens."
Around 6 million Guatemalans are due to go to the polls on Sunday in an election expected to be a tight finish between right-wing former general Otto Perez Molina and center-left front-runner Alvaro Colom.
Hurricane Felix trashed a port on Nicaragua's Caribbean coast and threatened dangerous mudslides in Honduras and Guatemala. Eight districts were placed on alert in Guatemala as intense rain fell ahead of the storm.
