In a lawsuit filed on Tuesday, Pfizer said Impax was seeking U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to market tolterodine tartrate extended release capsules in a 4 milligram dose.

Tolterodine tartrate is the generic name for Detrol LA's active ingredient.

Pfizer said in the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York that it received a letter from Impax in January stating that Impax had included in its FDA application a certification that four of Pfizer's patents related to the drug are invalid, unenforceable, or would not be infringed by the Impax product.

Pfizer asked the court to find that Impax infringed the patents and to bar the company from selling its drug. (Reporting by Deena Beasley, editing by Maureen Bavdek)
