BOSTON, July 6 (Reuters) - Diversified U.S. manufacturer 3M Co (MMM.N) plans to stop manufacturing eye and ear protection devices in Massachusetts, a move that will result in about 200 layoffs, a spokeswoman said on Monday.

The maker of products ranging from Post-It notes to films for liquid-crystal display televisions has decided to move those manufacturing processes out of Southbridge, Massachusetts to other sites around the world.

About 50 non-manufacturing workers will retain their jobs at the site, which 3M gained through the acquisition of Aearo Co, spokeswoman Jacqueline Berry said. 3M expects to complete the layoffs by early 2010.

The Minneapolis-based company cut about 1,000 jobs during the second quarter, reducing its total headcount to about 76,000 people worldwide. (Reporting by Scott Malone; Editing by Derek Caney)
