Tue Mar 6, 2007 4:02pm EST

(Adds detail)

MEXICO CITY, March 6 (Reuters) - Mexico's consumer confidence index MXCONC=ECI slipped in February to 103.6 from 104.3 in January, the government said on Tuesday.

The government said the consumer confidence level fell 4.2 percent in comparison with the same month a year ago and slipped 0.7 percent from January.

The index showed more people felt economically better off than a year earlier and expected their households to be more financially sound a year into the future than in January.

More people also felt able to buy big-ticket consumer durables than in the previous month. However people were much less confident than in January about the state of the Mexican economy compared to a year earlier, and fewer respondents saw it on a better footing in 12 months' time.
