LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Country star Glen Campbell will perform a rare club gig in Los Angeles on August 19, the day his new CD of rock 'n' roll covers hits stores, his label said on Wednesday.

Campbell, 72, will perform at the Troubadour in West Hollywood as part of a busy promotional schedule for his Capitol Records release "Meet Glen Campbell."

The album boasts covers of such tunes as U2's "All I Want Is You," Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" and the Foo Fighters' "Times Like These."

It marks Campbell's first release for Capitol since 1993's "Somebody Like That." Since then, he has focused on contemporary Christian, holiday and live albums.

Now living in Malibu and largely retired, Campbell was wooed off the golf course and back into the studio earlier this year by producer Julian Raymond, who presented him with a lengthy list of potential tunes.

"When we got to going on the sessions, I said, 'Whoa boy!' I was really pleased with it," Campbell told Reuters earlier this week.

Other tunes include the Velvet Underground's "Jesus" and John Lennon's posthumous release "Grow Old With Me," his personal favorite.

"Isn't that a great song? What a writer he was. He wrote good melodies too," Campbell said of the fallen Beatle.

In addition to the Troubadour gig, Campbell will perform on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on August 29. He will also be doing several radio interviews and online performances.
