NEW YORK, June 8 (Reuters) - The expansion plans for ConocoPhillips' (COP.N) Illinois refinery hit an obstacle after an appeals board of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rejected key air permits, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site on Sunday.

The expansion at the Wood River refinery, which is co-owned by Encana Corp. (ECA.TO), would boost the volume of heavy Canadian crude that can be processed in the United States, the Journal said.

Conoco and Encana could not be reached immediately immediately for comment. (Reporting by Paritosh Bansal; Editing by Anshuman Daga)
