NEW YORK, Oct 9 (Reuters) - U.S stocks fell for a seventh straight session on Thursday, with the Dow sliding below 9,000 for the first time in more than five years, as investors worried recent moves by authorities worldwide to thaw frozen credit markets might not be enough to avert a global recession.

The Nasdaq fell below 1,700 for the first time since August 2003.

The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI was down 241.57 points, or 2.61 percent, at 9,016.53. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX was down 17.18 points, or 1.74 percent, at 967.76. The Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC was down 34.26 points, or 1.97 percent, at 1,706.07. (Reporting by Kristina Cooke; Editing by Jan Paschal)
