U.S. Muslim leader W. Deen Mohammed dead at 74
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Former U.S. Nation of Islam leader W. Deen Mohammed, who succeeded his father, Elijah Muhammad, as head of the black nationalist group, died on Tuesday at age 74, his family said.
Mohammed took control of the Chicago-based Nation of Islam in 1975 after the death of his father, who founded the black separatist organization in 1934.
The son adopted a more orthodox Muslim approach that led to a split with Louis Farrakhan, who now leads the group.
The announcement said Mohammed died in a Chicago suburb of undisclosed causes.
"He was a public servant who stood up against racial oppression, and worked continuously for peace, unity, and reconciliation. He maintained his father's legacy of economic and political empowerment for the Muslim community," the announcement said.
Mohammed once led the American Society of Muslims, but resigned from that group several years ago.
