UPDATE 1-FACTBOX-NYT names Spitzer as 'Client 9' in sex case

March 10 (Reuters) - New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer is the individual identified as "Client 9" in court papers filed last week in breakup of an international prostitution ring called the Emperors Club, The New York Times reported on Monday.

Client 9 paid $4,300 to a $1,000-an-hour prostitute on Feb. 13, according to court papers. He also paid for a train ticket to bring the woman from New York City to Washington in a possible violation of the federal Mann Act, which prohibits the interstate transport of any woman for the purposes of "debauchery."

Violations of the Mann Act are punishable by fines of up to $5,000 and up to five years in prison.

Spitzer, a Democrat, apologized to his family and the public on Monday for a "private matter" and said he had "failed to live up to the standard that I expect of myself," but he made no reference to The New York Times report.

Spitzer has not been charged in the case of the multimillion-dollar prostitution ring.

Here are the key facts about Client 9 from the court papers filed in New York Federal Court:

* The papers describe six telephone calls between Client 9 and one of the defendants that were intercepted by wiretaps between Feb. 12 and 13. Client 9 arranged to meet with a prostitute on Feb. 13 in Room 871 of a hotel.

* Wiretaps also recorded the defendants discussing Client 9 between Feb. 11 and Feb. 14, including discussing his payment problems due to the late arrival of a cash deposit.

* After the deposit arrived on the 13th, Client 9 asked if he could pay an additional $1,500 to the prostitute who was to meet him that night to avoid "future payment issues."

* The defendants told "Kristen," a $1,000-an-hour prostitute, that Client 9 would pay for a train ticket to bring her from New York City to Washington on Feb. 13.

* Client 9 met with "Kristen," who was described by one of the defendants on the night of Feb. 13 as an American, petite, very pretty brunette weighing 105 pounds (48 kg).
