The appointment of Garvey, who has served since January as senior vice president of finance, is effective May 11, the company said.

In December, the company announced that Chief Financial Officer Theo de Kool would be retiring at the end of the fiscal year.

Sara Lee, which makes such products as Sara Lee bread, Kiwi shoe polish and Sanex body wash, raised its forecast for 2009 earnings last week as it posted a higher-than-expected rise in quarterly profit.

The company has been overhauling its business, spinning off or selling some brands, cutting costs, and devoting more money to product development and advertising. (Reporting by Alexandria Sage)
