Canada approves Newfoundland LNG project

CALGARY, Alberta, Aug 13 (Reuters) - A liquefied natural gas terminal proposed by privately held Newfoundland LNG Ltd has received environmental approval from the Canadian government.

The project, a liquefied natural gas storage and transshipment terminal could be built as soon as 2010. It includes storage tanks and jetties and could cost as much as C$1.5 billion ($1.4 billion) to complete, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. website.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency cleared the project on Monday.

The terminal is to be built on Placentia Bay, near Harvest Energy Trust's (HTE_u.TO) Come by Chance refinery and another refinery planned by Newfoundland and Labrador Refining Corp.

Newfoundland LNG could not be immediately reached for comment.
