Lonergan ("Gangs of New York") will pen the screenplay to the comedy "Father's Day," which Kutcher and partner Jason Goldberg are producing for Columbia Pictures.

The film is a multigenerational look at fatherhood, centering on a father and son who have never gotten along but who find something in common when they coincidentally have baby sons at the same time.

Lonergan, a playwright and screenwriter, won praise and an Oscar nomination for the 2000 film "You Can Count on Me," which he wrote and directed. He also was nominated for a best original screenplay Oscar for director Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York."

He recently completed directing the drama "Margaret," starring Anna Paquin and Matt Damon. Lonergan wrote the script for the drama, which Fox Searchlight will release.
