U.S. to send envoy to weekend talks with Iran

Tue Jul 15, 2008 10:00pm EDT
WASHINGTON, July 15 (Reuters) - The United States will send an envoy to talks with Iran about Tehran's nuclear program this weekend in Geneva, a senior U.S. official said on Tuesday.

In a shift in U.S. policy, Undersecretary of State William Burns will join a meeting between European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana and top Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili.

They will discuss an offer made by world powers to Iran to give up its sensitive nuclear work that the West believes is aimed at building an atomic bomb. (Reporting by Sue Pleming; Editing by John O'Callaghan)
