America Ferrera wins Emmy for best comedy actress

LOS ANGELES, Sept 16 (Reuters) - America Ferrera, who portrays perky but homely fashion magazine assistant Betty Suarez on the new ABC hit show "Ugly Betty," won the Emmy Award as best actress in a comedy on Sunday.

It was the 23-year-old actress' first Emmy nomination and follows the show's first season on the air. Earlier this year, Ferrera won a Golden Globe award for her role.
