Pakistani envoy in U.S. says Bhutto safe
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is safe and at her home in Karachi after two explosions ripped through her convoy as she returned to her country after seven years in exile, the Pakistani ambassador in the United States said on Thursday.
Mahmud ali Durrani told CNN in an interview: "She is safe in her own house. She is absolutely safe."
The death toll in the attacks rose to at least 45, according to reports from hospitals in Karachi. "We are extremely sorry and sad about the loss of life but the good news is that Benazir is safe," Durrani said.
"She was on the lower deck of the bus, to the best of my knowledge, when this happened so she is safe and sound," he added.
