U.S. consumer confidence falls to record low -ABC

   NEW YORK, Nov 18 (Reuters) - The ABC News Consumer Comfort
Index reached a historic low on Tuesday, with the nation's
economic weakness threatening retailers at the beginning of the
holiday season.
 In the latest release of the 22-year weekly poll, the CCI
fell to -52 from -50 in the previous week.
 Economists in a Reuters survey expected a reading of -50.
 The index ranges from -100 to +100.

 The ABC News consumer confidence survey was based on a
sample of about 1,000 interviews conducted in the four weeks
ending Nov. 16 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3
percentage points.
