LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" returned to the airwaves with the spring still in its step Monday.

The fourth-season premiere averaged 21.7 million viewers from 8-10 p.m., according to preliminary estimates released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research. If the figures hold up, it will have outdrawn the third-season premiere, which grabbed more than 20 million in September.

"Stars" took the air out of the competition at 9 p.m. in particular, driving CBS' comedy duo "Two and a Half Men" and "Rules of Engagement" to season lows; NBC's "Deal or No Deal" also was running below par, but Fox's "24" held up O.K.

Nightly averages: ABC (16.9 million), CBS (11.7 million), NBC (11.3 million), Fox (10.1 million) and the CW (2.3 million).
