Samuel David Cheney is the first baby for Mary Cheney and her longtime partner, Heather Poe. He is the sixth grandchild for the vice president and his wife, Lynne. He weighed 8 lbs, six ounces (about 3.8 kg) at birth at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington.

Mary Cheney, 38, was an aide to her father during the 2004 presidential election campaign and was hired last year as an executive for America Online.

She has expressed opposition to a proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. The measure, backed by President George W. Bush, failed to pass in Congress.
