MEXICO CITY, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Mexican homebuilder Urbi (URBI.MX) posted a 30 percent fall in third-quarter net profit to 459 million pesos as it sold fewer homes because of the economic slump.

Urbi said on Monday its sales in the quarter were 3.076 billion pesos ($228 million), down 27 percent over the year-ago period.

The company said it sold 10,576 homes during the period, 11 percent fewer than in the same quarter in 2008.

"The recent financial crisis has made permanent changes to the economy, credit continues to be scarce, difficult to obtain and more expensive," Urbi Chief Executive Cuauhtemoc Perez said in a statement.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization at Urbi, which specializes in selling houses that cost under $40,000 each, declined 21 percent to 951 million pesos. ($1=13.5035 pesos as of end-Sept) (Reporting by Noel Randewich; editing by Carol Bishopric, Leslie Gevirtz)
