UPDATE 1-Mexico retail sales up 2.9 pct in Sept

Mon Nov 26, 2007 3:53pm EST

MEXICO CITY, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Mexican retail sales rose 2.9 percent year-on-year in September, in line with expectations, the government said on Monday.

Economists in a Reuters poll had forecast retail sales MXRSLY=ECI would increase by 2.93 percent.

Wholesale sales, often an indicator of the future performance of retail sales, were down 0.9 percent compared with September of last year.

Month over month, retail sales in September were up an inflation-adjusted 0.28 percent.

Pinched by a U.S. economic slowdown, Mexico's economy is expected to pare growth to around 3 percent this year from 4.8 percent in 2006 as factories ease production levels.

The government hopes healthy demand from consumers will help sustain growth. (Reporting by Jason Lange, Editing by Chizu Nomiyama)

New security restrictions could hurt airlines

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tighter security measures at U.S. airports following an attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound jet could dampen enthusiasm for air travel, hurting the airline industry just as it seemed poised to recover from a period of bruising losses, some industry experts say.
