Leaders of the largest U.S. automakers were in Washington on Tuesday asking lawmakers to extend them a multi-billion dollar lifeline to avoid bankruptcy. Congressional leaders were noncommittal about any immediate government rescue but indicated companies like General Motors GM.N, Ford (F.N) and Chrysler would not be allowed to fail.

President-elect Obama pledged to the nation's governors he will quickly offer federal money to bankroll infrastructure projects meant, in part, to stimulate the economy. Obama does not take office until mid-January but the president-elect told state lawmakers he will have the cash ready.
