WASHINGTON, Dec 3 (Reuters) - The Washington Post included the following items on its front page on Dec. 3. Reuters has not verified these stories and does not vouch for their accuracy.

Operatives for President-elect Barack Obama are visiting federal agencies around Washington to get to know the main functions and challenges facing the government even before President George W. Bush leaves office. The 135 Obama staffers are broken up into ten teams to comb through the agencies.

---

Leaders of the largest U.S. automakers were in Washington on Tuesday asking lawmakers to extend them a multi-billion dollar lifeline to avoid bankruptcy. Congressional leaders were noncommittal about any immediate government rescue but indicated companies like General Motors GM.N, Ford (F.N) and Chrysler would not be allowed to fail.

The armed attackers who killed at least 174 people in Mumbai, India were highly trained and relied on sophisticated technology to coordinate their assault on the city. The small team of Islamists were able to reap such carnage, in part, because they were so well organized in techniques that could foreshadow tactics of future attacks.

President-elect Obama pledged to the nation's governors he will quickly offer federal money to bankroll infrastructure projects meant, in part, to stimulate the economy. Obama does not take office until mid-January but the president-elect told state lawmakers he will have the cash ready. Questions remain, though, about whether cumbersome building projects are the best way to spark job growth in the short term. (Reporting by Patrick Rucker; editing by Todd Eastham)
