CALGARY, Alberta, Jan 27 (Reuters) - French oil major Total SA (TOTF.PA) may consider boosting its position in the Fort Hills oil sands project if it succeeds in acquiring UTS Energy Corp (UTS.TO) and its 20 percent stake, a Total spokesman said on Tuesday.

Media reports have said Fort Hills partner Teck Cominco (TCKb.TO) may be interested in selling its 20 percent interest in the delayed project to help it repay debt.

"We'll consider the possibility of acquiring an additional interest in the project," spokesman Paul Floren said. He also said Total's offer on Tuesday likely is a surprise for UTS. (Reporting by Jeffrey Jones; Editing by Gary Hill)
