Canada govt says no vote on financing move Monday
OTTAWA, Nov 27 (Reuters) - A contentious move by the Canadian government to eliminate direct public financing of political parties will not be voted on on Monday, a senior official said on Friday.
Opposition parties are threatening to vote against the proposal and bring down the minority Conservative government. The measure was unveiled as part of the government's fiscal update on Thursday.
Officials initially said the measure would be part of a confidence motion which will be voted on on Monday.
But a spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper told Reuters that the financing proposal would be contained in a separate piece of legislation.
That legislation will be introduced into Parliament on Monday but no date for a vote had been set.
Monday's confidence vote will go ahead as planned and the government could be defeated if all three opposition parties unite against it. (Reporting by Randall Palmer, writing by David Ljunggren; Editing by Frank McGurty)
