FACTBOX: Quotes from the Republican debate

Wed Nov 28, 2007 10:58pm EST

(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidates clashed on immigration, the Iraq war and torture during a debate on Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Barack Obama

Here are some key exchanges and quotes from the debate:

FORMER NEW YORK GOV. RUDY GIULIANI, on FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY's record on immigration: "They never even seemed to catch the illegal immigrants that were working at his mansion. So I would say he had a sanctuary mansion, not just a sanctuary city.

ROMNEY: "I think it is really kind of offensive actually to suggest, to say look, you know what, if you are a homeowner and you hire a company to come provide a service at your home ... if you hear someone with a funny accent, you, as a homeowner, are supposed to go out there and say, 'I want to see your papers.' Is that what you're suggesting?"

GIULIANI: "It just happens you have a special immigration problem that nobody else up here has. You were employing illegal immigrants."

---

ARIZONA SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, to TEXAS REP. RON PAUL: "I've heard him now in many debates talk about bringing our troops home, and about the war in Iraq and how it's failed. And I want to tell you that that kind of isolationism, sir, is what caused World War Two. ... The message of these brave men and women who are serving over there is, 'Let us win.'"

PAUL: "The real question you have to ask is why do I get the most money from active duty officers and military personnel? ... I don't want to send troops overseas using force to tell them how to live. We would object to it here and they're going to object to us over there."

---

FORMER TENNESSEE SEN. FRED THOMPSON, on a campaign ad that shows unflattering footage of his rivals: "I just wanted to give my buddies here a little extra air time."

---

ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE, on whether Jesus would use the death penalty: "Jesus was too smart to ever run for public office."

---

HUCKABEE, on the future of the space program: "Maybe Hillary could be on the first rocket to Mars."
