WASHINGTON, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Northrop Grumman Corp. (NOC.N) and General Dynamics Corp. (GD.N) have won large contracts for continued design work on the new DDG 1000 Zumwalt class destroyer, the U.S. Navy said on Monday.

It said Northrop won a $268 million modification to an earlier contract, exercising the Navy's option for continued detail design work on the new destroyer.

General Dynamics won a $257 million modification to its earlier contract, the Navy said.

Both companies have been working on the new destroyer, which is to be the lead ship in a new family of warships.

Northrop welcomed the contract and said it would fund further detail design work and procurement of long-lead materials and would run through 2013.
