LOS ANGELES, Jan 29 (Reuters) - AES Corp.'s (AES.N) 496-megawatt Redondo Beach Unit 8 at its Redondo Beach, California, natural gas-fired power plant shut for a week of planned annual maintenance work on Monday, an AES spokesman said.

While Unit 8 at the Los Angeles County natural gas-fired plant is down for a week, the outage at the 496-MW Unit 7 will last until sometime in March, the spokesman said. Unit 7 is undergoing a major turbine overhaul. It went offline on Jan. 7.

Nearby, at the AES Alamitos natural gas-fired power plant in Long Beach, Unit 3 went offline on Monday. It has a production capacity of 332 megawatts. There was no immediate word when it would return to service.

In Southern California, a megawatt powers about 650 homes.
