SANTIAGO, May 29 (Reuters) - Chile, which provides around a third of the world's copper, produced 459,543 tonnes of the metal in April, up 3.2 percent from the same month last year, the government said on Tuesday.

Output from January through April this year rose 5.9 percent compared to the same period last year to 1.798 million tonnes.

In March this year, Chile's copper output was 502,106 tonnes.

Production of molybdenum in April rose to 4,077 tonnes, an increase of 17.9 percent over the same month last year.

Chile is the one of the world's leading exporters of molybdenum, which is used to strengthen steel, and the world's largest producer of copper, which accounts for over half its exports and is the backbone of the local economy.
