Boston owners dedicate triumph to Red Sox Nation
DENVER (Reuters) - The Boston Red Sox owners heaped praise on their players after Sunday's World Series sweep over the Colorado Rockies and dedicated the victory to their fans across the world.
"The guys in uniform played like a band of brothers the entire season," team president Larry Lucchino said of his squad.
"We are a grateful ownership and organization tonight to these players, to the fans, to the Red Sox Nation, from the Dominican Republic to Japan, all over the continental U.S.
"This is for you, as well."
Club chairman Tom Werner said Boston's World Series triumph in 2004 was for their long-suffering, older fans, who had waited 86 years for a title.
He dedicated Sunday's victory to the Red Sox Nation, the name given to the team's supporters at home and across the world.
"2004 was for our parents and grandparents and those people who suffered through eight decades before a world championship," Werner said at Sunday's trophy presentation.
"This is for us and for our children and for everybody in Red Sox Nation that we can do it again."
Principle owner John Henry paid tribute to the fallen Rockies.
"What they accomplished, 21 out of 22, to get to the World Series was incredible, so we want to congratulate them," Henry said.
"To win the second trophy is just an incredible accomplishment."
