Pitcher Matsuzaka put on disabled list by Red Sox
BOSTON (Reuters) - The Boston Red Sox have placed pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka on the 15-day disabled list after an MRI scan revealed a mild strain of the rotator cuff in his right shoulder, the team said Friday.
The 27-year-old, who left Tuesday's game against Seattle after four innings due to shoulder fatigue, has been replaced on the roster by Jeff Bailey from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Right-hander Matsuzaka, whose move has been backdated to May 28, is 8-0 for Boston this season with a 2.53 ERA in 11 starts.
It is his first trip to the disabled list since he joined the Red Sox last season after spending eight years in Japan as the Seibu Lions' top pitcher.
Matsuzaka, the most expensive Japanese player to enter Major League Baseball on a deal worth $103.1 million, is known as "Dice-K" by American fans.
