When police burst into his apartment Zhang was found taking a variety of drugs with four friends, the Xinhua news agency said, citing a Beijing Television report.

A subsequent urine sample tested positive for ketamine and ice, the report said.

Zhang appeared "excited and delirious" and shouted at police "I don't know who you are and why you're in my apartment" before being taken away, it added.

Zhang, 45, whose works include "Little Red Flowers", which won an award at the Berlin Film Festival, is one of China's most popular directors. He is a member of the so-called "six-generation" filmmakers, known for his non-mainstream independent works.

In 1994, Time Magazine named Zhang one of 100 young world leaders for the 21st century.
