BEIJING (Reuters) - Defending champions Ricardo Santos and Emanuel Rego were knocked out of the semi-finals of the Olympic beach volleyball on Wednesday, losing 20-22, 18-21 to fellow Brazilians Marcio Araujo and Fabio Luiz Magalhaes.

Marcio and Fabio Luiz, the 2005 world champions, have been in sporadic form during the Olympics but pulled it all together in the semi with Fabio Luiz particularly strong at the net.

Ricardo and Emanuel pulled back from big deficits in both sets but it was not enough to get into the final. The last point was particularly painful as a cross-court spike by Ricardo was called out. He challenged it all the way back to the bench.

Marcio and Fabio Luiz fell on each other in the sand before running around the court with the Brazilian flag. They will now play U.S. favorites and current world champions Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser for gold.
