Olympics-Beijing air clears for big day in athletics

Fri Aug 15, 2008 7:44pm EDT

BEIJING, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Olympic host city Beijing woke to its second consecutive clear morning on Saturday, the eighth day of the Olympics, which will feature a long-awaited showdown in the Olympic men's 100 metres final in the Bird's Nest stadium.

China

Beijing will be sunny for the men's 20k race walk and the tennis men's double gold medal match, with city weather forecasters predicting a maximum temperature of about 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit).

The Beijing Meteorological Bureau (www.bjmb.gov.cn) forecast a clear day with a slight wind, but said the skies over the Chinese capital would cloud up on Sunday.

The high, blue skies that Chinese organisers had been striving for mostly without success until Friday reminded many European visitors of Mediterranean conditions. Hong Kong, host to equestrian events, was expected to be fine, thanks to a ridge of high pressure along China's southern coast.

Qingdao, host to the sailing, is expected to be overcast for a full slate of events following disruptive weather earlier in the week. (Reporting by Paul Eckert; Editing by Nick Macfie)
