the Olympic gold medal in the women's 50m freestyle on Sunday.
 Age: 24 (date of birth: Nov 16, 1983)
 Place of birth: Schwedt, Germany
 2008 Olympic results:
 Two gold medals (50m and 100m freestyle)
 Career achievements:
 Four gold medals, 2006 European Championships, 50m and 100m
freestyle, 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays
 Silver medal, 2007 World Championships, 4x200m freestyle
relay
 Silver medal, 2006 European Championships, 4x100m medley
relay
 Bronze medal, 2007 World Championships, 100m freestyle
 Previous Olympic results:
 Bronze, 2000 Olympics, 4x200m freestyle relay
 Fourth place, 2004 Olympics, 4x100m freestyle relay
 After the 2004 Games, Steffen took six months off, saying
she couldn't stand swimming any more and sought the help of a
psychologist. She returned to the pool in 2005 and won four
gold medals at the 2006 European Championships.
