SINGAPORE, June 17 (Reuters) - The following are stories from Singapore newspapers on Wednesday. Reuters has not verified these stories.

THE STRAITS TIMES

- The first of Singapore's two submarines will become operational sometime next year. The city-state bought two second-hand diesel-electric submarines from Sweden in 2005 and the first vessel left a Swedish shipyard on Tuesday for sea trials after extensive refurbishing and upgrading.

BUSINESS TIMES

- Malaysia's Genting Bhd (GENT.KL) will invest in Macau if the opportunity arises, Chairman and CEO Lim Kok Thay said at a shareholders' meeting on Tuesday. His comment comes amid speculation the firm may take over MGM Mirage's stake in a Macau casino which the U.S. firm owns jointly with Pansy Ho, the daughter of gaming tycoon Stanley Ho.

- Martial arts star Jet Li bought a S$20 million bungalow in Singapore's posh Bukit Timah area in a sign that the Beijing-born actor plans to settle in the city-state. Singapore does not allow foreigners to own landed property except on the resort-island of Sentosa.
