Cubs' Marmol to replace Wood for NL All-Stars

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Carlos Marmol will replace team mate Kerry Wood on the National League All-Star team, manager Clint Hurdle said Sunday.

    Sports

Wood was unable to play because of a blister on his pitching hand, said Hurdle.

Marmol, who got hammered on Saturday for five runs and five hits in just one inning, is 2-3 with a 4.13 ERA this season in 49 games for the Central Division-leading Cubs.

"It's good for his confidence, good for his psyche," Cubs manager Lou Piniella told the team's website (chicago.cubs.mlb.com). "Outside of a couple bad performances, for the most part he has been nails. I'm happy for him and it's deserved."

The Cubs are the first team since the 2004 New York Yankees to have eight representatives on the All-Star team.

The game will be played at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.
