BEIJING (Reuters) - Kazakh Bakhyt Sarsekbayev won the Olympic boxing welterweight gold medal by outpointing Cuba's Carlos Banteaux in the final on Sunday.

China

Asian champion Sarsekbayev, 26, trailed 1-0 after the first round but then stepped up a few gears to win 18-9 and make sure Cuba left without a title.

The superpower of the sport, who came here with their least-experienced squad in years after a string of defections, will have to be content with eight medals, four silver and four bronze, but no gold.

China's Hanati Silamu and South Korean Kim Jung-joo lost in the welterweight semi-finals to share the bronze.
